Cyprus is a small island with a long and uncomfortable history on this subject. For years the so-called artiste visa functioned as a recognised route for trafficking into the island's cabarets, and the international pressure that followed shaped everything about how the law reads and how it is enforced today. It is impossible to describe the Cypriot situation honestly without starting there.
The law itself is straightforward. The act between two consenting adults is not an offence. Everything organised around it is: brothels, procuring, advertising on someone else's behalf, and living on the earnings. And paying for sex with a person who has been trafficked is a crime whether or not you knew — which, given the island's history, is the single sentence on this page worth reading twice.
Three very different places
Limassol has become the island's money city, with a marina, foreign wealth and the hotels that follow both; it is where most of the private market sits. Nicosia is a working capital, split by a border, and behaves like neither of the coastal towns. Ayia Napa is a four-month season aimed at a young crowd and empties completely in October. Nothing that is true about one of them is reliably true about the others.

It removes the failure that starts almost every bad story, which is that the woman at the door was never the woman in the photographs.
